Three-stage process for making a basket bowl
Creating a basket bowl is a great project to develop pottery skills and have a go at willow weaving. During three sessions, you can create your bowl, fire and decorate it and then add a willow rim to finish it.
First workshop ~ Create a bowl, a plate, or a dish using a pre-made biscuit-fired mould. After creating your bowl, it will be dried ready for a first firing called a biscuit firing.
Second workshop ~ Use oxides and coloured slips on your biscuit-fired piece to create a range of colours and patterns. Discover how a variety of combustibles (dried fruit peelings, seaweed, nut shells) generate unpredictable colours and markings to keep the artistic process alive. The initial firing uses the unique downdraft stovepipe kiln. The kiln’s direct heat will decide the final effect on the bowls, leaving you curious to see what emerges from the fire.
Third workshop ~ Clean & seal your fired work. Learn how to weave a willow rim (and handle, if you desire) to add to your piece. Proudly take home your own creation to share with others!
