Willow weaving lesson

Three-stage process for making a basket bowl

Creating a basket bowl is a great project to develop pottery skills and have a go at willow weaving. During three sessions, you can create your bowl, fire and decorate it and then add a willow rim to finish it.

First workshop ~ Create a bowl, a plate, or a dish using a pre-made biscuit-fired mould. After creating your bowl, it will be dried ready for a first firing called a biscuit firing.

Second workshop ~ Use oxides and coloured slips on your biscuit-fired piece to create a range of colours and patterns. Discover how a variety of combustibles (dried fruit peelings, seaweed, nut shells) generate unpredictable colours and markings to keep the artistic process alive. The initial firing uses the unique downdraft stovepipe kiln. The kiln’s direct heat will decide the final effect on the bowls, leaving you curious to see what emerges from the fire.

Third workshop ~ Clean & seal your fired work.  Learn how to weave a willow rim (and handle, if you desire) to add to your piece.  Proudly take home your own creation to share with others!

We had a great family pottery day with Giulia and were amazed at how many things we created. We used a range of pottery techniques and especially enjoyed throwing on the wheel – this was a first for us! Giulia’s energy and creative spirit really inspires and she encouraged us all to get involved and have a go. Looking forward to a follow up glazing session soon.
The Valpy family

My son was struggling at school but found real confidence and joy in working with Giulia on his bowl. He really loved choosing the glazes and was thrilled with the final effect. His bowl is now in pride of place in our home. Thank you for the inspiration!

I had a great day with my two young daughters, we made lots of pieces including a beautiful coiled pot which will be treasured. It was a really nice way to spend time with my children and it was great to see our creativity come alive!

We had a very special day with you on Thursday…..
It couldn’t have been better. Everyone was still talking about it all day yesterday. (And we’re telling our friends!)
We are now very excited to come back and see you again for the final flourish to all our pottery-ware.
Thank you so much for our perfect day.
The Roberts family

As a family we were all excited to glaze our biscuit-fired pottery. Glazing our items, we once again experienced lots of new techniques and the sky was the limit with colours and designs. It’s a wonderful mystery to know how things will turn out! The food and Giulia’s hospitality was wonderful, all day long, and we are looking forward to collecting our finished pottery and seeing the final results.
