Giulia the Artist

Giulia is an established ceramic artist who is passionate about bringing nature-inspired art to all.

Lesson throwing on a pottery kick wheel

Giulia started her career at St Albans College of Art & Design and then progressed on to take a Ceramic Design BA (Hons) at UWE with visiting artists Walter Keeler, Mo Jupp, and Nicholos Homoky helping build a wealth of experience and knowledge.  She was fortunate to undertake an apprenticeship at Dartington Pottery when Marianne de Trey and Janice Tchalenko were the lead Ceramic Artists and led by Pete Cook, Stephen Course and the late Pete Hazell.  This was then followed by working at Dart Pottery.

Giulia now works from her home studio creating a range of nature-inspired pieces exhibiting as part of the Devon Open Studios, South Hams Arts Forum and Hope Cove Gallery. She also uses a range of media beyond clay – from driftwood, sea-glass, slate, and willow throughout her unique ceramic pieces incorporating materials she finds while out and about in nature from her local surroundings Beach foraging and her own garden.

When I was 11, my dad bought me my first kick-wheel which I’m still using to this day! We built a brick kiln in our garden and began pit-firing my pottery in a sawdust kiln.  I started selling my wares at school summer fetes and on Saturdays at the market stalls in the old town, (Hemel Hempstead).  I used to dig clay from around the flintstone in the garden and make clay pinch pots, line them with moss and sticks, place them in our hedgerows and hope that the birds would then nest in them!”

“Clay has always made me tick. Inspired by nature, as a child I’d spend my days outside, with my naturally inquisitive mind digging up clay from flinted soil. The lure of creating with clay has stayed with me, driving me to share its infinite possibilities.  Nature provides me with the perfect motivation and momentum to create new pieces; especially with my passion for marine, hedgerow and Dartmoor landscapes which leads from one project to the next”.  ~ Giulia Matthews
